Denotation
The magazine has a photograph of a female RnB singer looking directly act the camera. The camera shot is a mid shot showing her head arms and waist. She’s standing in front of the background which blends in with the jacket she is wearing. The background is a silky brown colour which darkens midway through the magazine to the right side and covers the whole magazine. Above her head is the Blender masthead and in front of her are 8 cover-lines in white and red. The name of the photograph of the women is in big capital letter in red. A bar code is visible on the bottom left corner.
Masthead
The Blender masthead is very distinctive and very clever: red but the B of blender has a touch of orange on the left side of the B. The font is not serif; each letter is spaced out so they don’t join up. The whole Masthead apart from the letter B has a slash through it which gives a sense that the Masthead was put in an actual blender and got shredded a little bit. The font is very similar to the ‘Sprite’ font which connotes di-hydration, something good, happiness.
Character
The photograph is of the successful American RnB singer Janet Jackson (who is related to the pop king Michael Jackson).
Composition
She is posed in a very seductive ‘did you miss me?’ kind of way. She is standing up looking very sexual and provocative, which links to the cover-line under her name which says “The Queen Of Pop Is Back”.
NVC
Her non verbal communication is also very sexual and seductive. The way she has positioned her hip and her body is very sexy and seductive; her left hand pulling down her jeans is also very suggestive; her facial expression gives a sense that she is ready for something.
Lighting
The lighting suggests that is it is getting close to night.
Setting
There is very little setting however, the background looks like they are bed sheets, and the colour brown connotes, earthiness, friendliness, dependability and the background does make Janet look friendly.
Cover-lines
The main cover-line that relates to her photograph says: “Janet: The Queen Of Pop is Back”. This cover-line relates to her song ‘All for you’. This is because Janet didn’t make a song that it the Billboard hot100 songs in a long time, the song became Jackson's tenth number one on the Billboard Hot 100, staying there for seven weeks also the song was also an international success, reaching number one in Canada and charting inside the top ten of almost all European countries and the top five in Australia and New Zealand. The clothing that she wears for this photo is also very similar to her song ‘All for you’ which she dresses very sexual in. The different cover-lines show that the magazine is consists of different music genres and is not just about music but other interesting news, e.g. “Destiny Child: the closest we’ll ever come to a hot threesome” and “Tim McGraw: Conquers Country”. The cover-lines also consist of different music artist such as Tim McGraw an American country singer, Destiny Child an RnB girl group and Weezer a rock band. All cover-lines use the serif font.
Target Audience
Taking account of all the points above, the target audience is most likely to be male and female (more males then females) aged between 25-60. The people who would read this magazine would have a good knowledge of artist who have been making music for a long time, and also who listen to different types of music genres.
