Texual analaysis 1

Denotation

The magazine has a photograph of a female pop singer looking directly at the camera in a seductive way. It’s a medium long shot which shows her head, arms and waist. She is standing in front of the background with body turned to the side and her hands on her hips. The background is pure white and covers the whole of the magazine. Above the woman’s head is the Blender masthead in a big bold black font and next to her is her name ‘Katy Perry’ in big black and pink letters. Around her is 6 cover line in black and pink.

Masthead

The blender masthead is very distinctive: Black, big bold font which stands out. The font is not a serif font, each letters are evenly spaced so they don’t join up. Each word is upper case. A Blender is something used to mix things together and the masthead could mean the magazine has a mixture of different genres of music (Rock, Hip-Hop, R&B ect...).

Character

The cover photo is of the successful American singer ‘Katy Perry’.

Composition

She is posed in a very seductive ‘come and get me’ king of way. Her body language and clothes are very seductive and provocative.

Costume
Her clothing is a colourful bra which looks like she’s going to the beach and is very sexual, and her pants is of the same sort of material and is very short showing her thighs and is also very sexual. The costume has been chosen carefully to appeal the target audience who are most likely to be male as she is dressed very sexy. The costume has been used to promote her song ‘I kissed a girl’ which was produced by Dr. Luke.
NVC
Her non verbal communication is very seductive. Her hands touching her hips suggest she likes to be felt at that particular place; her lips slightly open showing her red lipstick, her eyes looking seductively at the camera.
Lighting
The lighting looks like its mid day.
Setting
There is very little setting, but the white background connotes heavenliness, purity and is not keeping to a set theme but makes Katy Perry look pure.

Cover-lines:

The main cover-line that relates to her photograph says: “Katy Perry: Kiss ‘n’ tell with Pop’s Bi-Curios babe”. This is making a reference to her song ‘I kissed a girl’ (released 2008) which was about her bi-sexual experience with a girl she kissed and as the song goes “I kissed a girl and a liked it” which topped the Billboard Hot 100 chart for seven consecutive weeks, becoming the 1000th chart-topper of the Rock Era and was the 10th best selling single in the 21st century. The song features a lot of women dressed in sexual clothes (including Katy Perry).  The different cover-line shows that the magazine has a mixture of different music genres and also doesn’t just focus on music but other interesting news and events, e.g. “Keeping it wheel: raps greatest rides”, “David Cook: Gets his fans wasted”. The cover-lines also consists of other music artist such as T-Pain who is an RnB singer and David cook who is an rock singer and Metallica which is a heavy metal band. All the cover-lines use a serif font.

Target Audience

Taking account of all the points above, the target audience is most likely to be male and female (more males then females) aged between16-40. The kind of people who would read this magazine would have a good knowledge on new artist and who listen to different genres of music. Also because mainly young people listen to pop, hip-hop and RnB and older people tend to listen to rock bands.
